Discovering Star Wars

Kale has discovered the Star Wars movies. It's amazing what you learn about while talking to people in the Nexus. In good order he found copies of the movies (original release for the last three episodes) as well as other related Star Wars media, like the Knights of the Old Republic video games and Expanded Universe books. But it was the movies he wanted to deal with first. It took him a few minutes to figure out the DVD players. There were multiple ones.

After a bit of experimentation and a quick run to the kitchen for snacks, he settled down to watch Episode one: The Phantom Menace.

About half way through, he started to laugh hysterically.

Kale frowns, staring at the screen. "Jar Jar Binks... Jar Jar Binks. Where have I heard that name before?"

"Don't know. Maybe he's an important figure in your time?" Though looking at the Gungan it wouldn't seem like it.

"I feel like I should know him..." No, it doesn't look like he would be important. They're going to be sorely disappointed

"Maybe we'll figure out why later?" he offers, rubbing Kale's shoulder a little. "We still have several vids to go through."

"I hope so. Or else this is going to be bothering me until I figure it out." The shoulder rubbing gets a soft pleased sigh.

He chuckles softly. "I get the feeling we're going to be seeing quite a bit of him, so they'll probably explain it."

"He looks like comic relief. Perhaps that's what he's therefor." That still doesn't negate that nagging feeling.

"Maybe. Don't worry, we'll figure it out eventually." A little more shoulder rubbing.

Oh, hey, shoulder rubbing. Good stuff that. He munches on the snack food and then throws some of it when Anakin comes on screen. "Oh come on, no one can be that good."

He snatches Kale's throwing hand. "No reason to waste food on him. Besides, it's the writer's interpretation of him. People used to portray Revan and I as shining beacons of Light and goodness too."

Aww... Tobias mustn't be much of a vid watcher. Or at least not Kale's style of vid watcher, where throwing food is perfectly acceptable way of showing displeasure. "Shining beacons of Light and Goodness?" He does not giggle.

Okay, maybe a little.

Tobias is just not much of a food-thrower. He outgrew that a long while back. He grins and ruffles Kale's hair. "Don't laugh, it's the truth. 'Commander Revan and General Tobias Donn, saviors of the galaxy.' That's what we were to people."

Bah. Food throwing is ALWAYS acceptable. "I wasn't laughing," he says indigently. "Merely expressing my disbelief."

Suuuuure it's always acceptable... "Now why's that so hard to believe?"

"I suppose because you and Revan hardly seem like the type. And it gives me a rather silly picture in my mind." If Tobias were to look, he would see himself and Revan dressed in white with lightsabers in cheesy superheroic poses.

"We were young - about your age - and idealistic back then, and full of half-learned Jedi wisdom." He does look, and maybe giggles a little himself. "Try in armor. That'd be closer."

"So you also thought of yourselves as shinning beacons of light?" There's a slight swat at the peaking. But armor does show up. It's very shiny.

"Well we tried to be at any rate. Hard to be a shining beacon of anything when you're wet and covered in mud." He chuckles at the swat. "There we are. That's closer."

Though the image in his head is more accurate to life - a couple of young men in dented, muddy, carbon-scored armor, with Revan in that mask and hooded cloak of his and Tobias with his hair pulled back into a short tail.

Some of the memories he stole from Tobias resurface, his eyes getting a far away look in them as he remembers how Tobias felt at the time, the armor dressed young man tired and smelly and hurt, just after a long hard battle.

He blinks and shakes his head. "No, mud does take a bit of the shine out of things."

And after all those battles all he could hear was death ringing in his ears and vibrating through his body. "We were young and brash and didn't know what we were getting into, and it broke us. All of us." He shakes his head.

"Yeah... it did," he says softly, the memories still swimming close to the surface.

He gives him a little shake. "You don't want into those memories. Trust me. It's nothing you need."

He gives a start at the shake. "I can't help it. They're there like they're mine. They are mine now."

"They might be, but they're mine too, and I know what they are and what they represent and it's nothing you need to be digging around in."
